PLYWOOD SUBFLOOR FOR NAIL DOWN INSTALLATIONS ON GRADE - MINIMUM 3/8" CDX PLYWOOD FOR 3/8" FLOORING, MIINIMUM 1/2" CDX PLYWOOD FOR 1/2" FLOORING, MINIMUM 5/8" PLYWOOD FOR 3/4" FLOORING. 4. Waterproofing membranes are specified in Division 7. C. SUBMITTALS: 1. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's detailed technical product data and installation instructions for each type of wood flooring. a. Include instructions for handling, storage, installation, finishing, protection and maintenance. 2. Samples: Submit sets of range samples for each type of wood flooring. Include finish where factory-finished flooring is required. Include samples of border units where borders of different color, texture or pattern are indicated. D. QUALITY ASSURANCE 1. Installer Qualifications: Specialized wood flooring firm with not less than 3 years successful experience in installation, sanding and finishing. Provide references. 2. Source Quality Control: Obtain flooring of each type from single manufacturer or source, to ensure match of quality, color, pattern and texture. E. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING: 1. Moisture Content: At time of delivery, limit average moisture content of wood flooring from 7 - 9%, with 10% max. for any one piece. POSSIBLY REDUCE TO 6-8% FOR VERY DRY REGIONS, AFTER VERIFYING AVAILABILITY. 2. Protect wood flooring from excessive moisture in shipment, storage, and handling. Deliver in unopened cartons or bundles and store n a dry place, with adequate air circulation. Do not deliver material to building until "wet work" such as concrete and plaster have been completed and cured to a condition of equilibrium. F. JOB CONDITIONS: 1. Conditioning: Do not proceed with installation of wood flooring until spaces have been enclosed and are at approximate humidity condition for occupancy. Condition wood for a minimum of 5 days prior to start of installation by placing in spaces to receive flooring and maintaining ambient temperature between 65 deg. F and 75 deg. F (18 deg. C and 24 deg C.) before, during, and after installation. Open packages of wood flooring which are sealed (if any) to permit natural adjustment of moisture content. G. EXTRA STOCK/REPLACEMENT MATERIAL 1. After completion of wood flooring work, deliver to project site not less than 1.0% of quantity of each type of wood flooring installed on the project. Provide in manufacturer's original, unopened cartons or bundles. II. PART 2 - PRODUCTS A. WOOD STRIP/PLANK FLOORING: STRIP IS 2 1/4" OR 2" WIDE PLANK IS 3", 4", 5" AND WIDER 1. Adhesive/ Mastic: Bostik's best or Franklin 811 or special mastic of type recommended by manufacturer of flooring, and complying with flammability and environmental control restrictions. C. Fasteners: As recommended by manufacturer, but not less than recommended by NWFA in "Installation Manual". D. Stain: Penetrating type non-fading wood stain of color required to match Architect's sample. E. Wood Filler: Paste wood filler type, solid trowelled type, pigmented if necessary to match Architect's sample. USUALLY RETAIN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING OR REVISE TO SUIT PROJECT. F. Floor Sealer: Penetrating type, pliable, wood-hardening finish/sealer; Dura Seal's Durafinish, Watco Oil sealer or equivalent sealer as recommended by flooring manufacturer. G. Polyurethane Finish: Moisture curing type polyurethane finish, or oil modified polyurethane (40% solids minimum) especially compounded for multiple coat application on wood floors. H. Waterbased Polyurethane: complying with environmental and flammability restrictions, a waterbased 100% polyurethane (no acrylics) especially compounded for multiplecoat application on wood floors. I. Swedish Type: a catalyzed primer coat followed by acid cured conversion varnish, as manufactured by Glitsa American or equivalent. J. Floor wax - Liquid, solvent type, slip resistant. K. Wood Trim: Where indicated to match wood flooring, provide wood base board molding, base shoe molding and stair treads and risers (if any) of same species and grade as wood flooring. Except as otherwise indicated, provide wood stripping, reducer strips, nosings, saddles and threshold, as indicated in or adjacent to wood flooring, of same species, grade, and cut as wood flooring. L. Wood Air Vents: where indicated to match wood flooring, provide wood air vents of same species, grade, and cut as wood flooring. RETAIN EITHER ABOVE GENERAL PARAGRAPH OF EDIT APPROPRIATE PARAGRAPHS BELOW. THE FOLLOWING ACCESSORY ITEMS ARE OPTIONAL ITEMS WITH MANY POSSIBLE VARIATIONS. Metal Feature Strip: 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1" width, 5/16", 1/4", 1/8" thickness, solid brass strip, designed for in-laying in to wood flooring. IV. PART 3 - EXECUTION A. INSPECTION: 1. Examine substrate on which wood flooring will be installed and conditions under which work will be performed. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in manner acceptable to Installer. DELETE BELOW IF NO APPLICATION ON CONCRETE. B. PREPARATION: 1. Wherever direct application of wood flooring to concrete substrate is indicated, test for dryness before proceeding with installation. A good test is the calcium chloride test. Installation over concrete is acceptance by contractor of moisture content of the concrete at the time of installation. 2. Apply any and all moisture barriers that are necessary to complete project as specified. 3. Make sure slab is free of dirt, dust, and all foreign debris. Slab levelness to be 1/8" (1/4") to a 10' straight edge in any direction, with recessions and mounding to be either ground down or patched for preparation of wood flooring on a flat surface. C. INSTALLATION: 1. General: Comply with flooring manufacturer's instructions and recommendations, but not less than recommended by NWFA in "Hardwood Flooring Installation Material". 2. Pattern: Comply with pattern or direction of pattern for laying wood flooring as indicated or, if not indicated, as directed by Architect. NOTE: PATTERN MUST BE SHOWN ON DRAWING OR OTHERWISE INDICATED. 3. Expansion Space: Provide expansion space at walls and other obstructions and terminations of flooring, not less than 1/2" unless otherwise indicated on drawings. Unless full concealed by trim, fill expansion space with flush cork expansion strip. Nail shoe molding or other trim to baseboard, rather than to flooring. 4. Wood Strip / Plank Flooring Installation: a. Blind nail flooring to substrate in accordance with NWFA recommendations. b. Selection of nail type is Installer's option. DELETE ABOVE OR BELOW c. Felt underlayment: where strip / plank flooring nailed directly to subflooring, install over layer of asphalt saturated felt. 5. Glue Down Plank / Parquet Flooring Installation: a. Plank Flooring: FIREBIRD INDUSTRIES QUARTERED AMERICAN SERIES - ALL SPECIES - CAN BE GLUED DOWN RECOMMENDED WIDTH IS 3" AND THICKNESS OF 3/8" OR 1/2" SHOULD BE SPECIFIED. (1) Set in adhesive/mastic in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. b. Parquet Flooring: (1) Set in adhesive/mastic in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. D. SANDING AND FINISHING: 1. Machine sand installed unfinished flooring to remove offsets and non-level conditions, ridges, cups, and sanding machine marks which would be visually noticeable after finishing. Use a minimum of 3 grades of sandpaper for the machine and edge sanding. Buff floor with a minimum of 100 grit screenback discs. Vacuum clean and proceed with stain/seal and finishing. 2. Apply stain if needed to match approved sample. 3. Apply wood filler by paste wood filler method or solid trowel method as specified by manufacturer's directions. RETAIN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING OR INSERT ANOTHER. PAINTING SHOULD BE SPECIFIED IN DIVISION 9. 4. Apply floor sealer ( 2 or more coats) in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, including machine buffing with steel wool, in-the-wet as recommended by manufacturer. 5. Apply polyurethane finish in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Apply (2-3 coats) gloss or semi-gloss, buff, vacuum and tack between each coat. Match Architects sample. 6. Apply waterbased polyurethane finish in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Apply (2-3) coats of gloss or satin, buff, vacuum, and tack in between coats. Match Architectural sample. 7. Apply Swedish type floor finish in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Apply catalyzed primer coat(s) and final coat with appropriate sheen (gloss, satin, or matte) to match Architectural sample. Buff, vacuum, and tack between coats. 8. Apply liquid or paste wax and buff to appropriate lustre. E. Protection: Protect completed wood floor during remainder of construction period using heavy kraft paper or suitable covering, so that flooring and finish will be without damage or deterioration at the time of acceptance.
